Climbing into the mind of Little Ashes Director Paul Morrison

Amanda, Twilight Examiner, had the pleasure of interviewing Little Ashes director Paul Morrison:

About what brought Morrison to the Little Ashes picture, he says it was “[a] great screenplay.” Continues Morrison, it’s “an intimate human story of these three or four people’s relationships at an extraordinary moment in history of social and artistic ferment. Plus, it was about these three exceptional artists, at least one of whom was a hero of mine.”

About the screenplay, which was written by Philippa Goslett, Morrison says that “the good thing about [it] is that it doesn’t attempt to be a biopic. It doesn’t try to tell the whole story, it just explores one seminal moment. Really, it’s a love story, and that’s what gives it power.” The love story in Little Ashes is one that takes place between the characters of Salvador Dali and Federico Garcia Lorca.

Since I'm coming out of my Little Ashes shell thanks to the hot video yesterday, I can post these screen caps today, courtesy of NMM, without cringing:

Little Ashes Steamy Romp & Roll Clip

I have to post this because, well, Robert Pattinson is super sexy when he kisses, and he strips down near naked here. But it's with a man, baby.

Warning. This video gets pretty hot and heavy. I just pretend it's me he's getting down and dirty with. It seems to ease my eye strain.

Exclusive Little Ashes clips: Robert Pattinson is an amazing actor

Of three things I am absolutely certain:

1. My blog was in the crapper this morning- Alison from TwiFans and Sofia were kind enough to bring it to my attention. All should be well now.

2. I am in heaven right now watching "How to Be," and I am irrevocably convinced that Robert Pattinson is one of the best actors EVER (the other being Edward Norton.) I am ADORING this boy.
Robert Pattinson in "How to Be" by camelliamama.

Is it warped that even though he's sporting that giant mop of hair, orange unlaced Converse high-tops and a giant plaid, frumpy jacket, I still want to push him back against his junky old sports car and do unspeakable things to him?

Whew... went to my happy place for a minute.

3. What makes it worse is that I STILL want to do that, even after seeing these exclusive Little Ashes clips from
The Sun?! Thanks, Vitamin!

Little Ashes Director Dishes On Pattinson's Love Scenes

The L.A. Times Dishrag spoke exclusively with Paul Morrison about Rob Pattinson and his role in Little Ashes:

DR: Those gay sex scenes and the nude scenes, were those difficult for young actors Rob and Javier Beltran?

PM: I think they were difficult, but I think all sex scenes are difficult, and for all actors of all ages. I think Rob probably found it harder than Javier, to draw the line between performance and, ah, but that was also in the nature of the part, that Dali's sexuality was so complicated, complex and mysterious, I think even to himself, and his fear of sexuality, and if you're playing that role, that kind of rubs off on you, so I think sex and pain were so closely entwined with Dali that to play those scenes is also hard, and the triangle sex scene is an unbelievably difficult scene. One of those scenes in everybody's life when you're doing something and you know it's really really wrong, it really, it goes against the grain, but you're doing it, so playing that scene is hard, it's always hard.

Littleashespic3-1

DR: It's wonderful to see a young actor like this, who despite the fame and the adulation is choosing a path and taking some extremely challenging and provocative roles. Do you think he will continue on that path?

PM: He is serious about acting and I am sure that, yeah, he will want to do roles that challenge him. I can't tell you how hard he worked on the role of Dali. I was encouraging him to just play the script, but he was for himself hunting down every day bits of film or tape or interviews or a biography of Dali. He worked really hard at it, both intellectually and emotionally. I think that's in his blood now, I think. I don't think he'll be satisfied with playing less than interesting roles.

Dish Rag: Playing Salvador Dali is a daunting role for a young actor.

PM: Yeah, I don't think Rob realized what he was getting into when he agreed to do it, but he really worked hard at it, he really grappled with it, and I think he's done something very extraordinary. It's so difficult to do, because you have to tread light all the time between playing Dali as a young lovable young man, which he was, and suggesting the kind of pastiche of himself that he became in later life, that he presented to the public in later life, and that's a very tall order, and I think Rob pulled it off.

Would Rob do full-frontal nudity? Read on...

Oh, YUM... what I clamor to read... an interview with Robert Pattinson from Moviefone-- here are the juicy parts:

I read that you were really nervous about filming the nude scenes and the explicit scenes, how did you prepare yourself for those?

[Laughs] I had so many ridiculous answers just come into my head [more laughs]. I had a penis implant! I don't know, I just kind of, it's funny because Spanish people are so ... have no problem with nudity at all, I mean at all, and English people obviously do have, like, the most enormous problem with it. It's like little things, like when I saw my father getting changed for swimming I got, like, traumatized by it ... I don't really know what I did, I just kind of freaked out a bit. [Laughs]

You were playing a real person -- how did that affect your preparation? Did you study up a lot on Dali?

Yeah, I mean it's nice. There are certain things like studying photos. I never really concentrated on my body in a performance before, well not to such an extent, and there were tons and tons of photos of him and he had quite strange posturing ... There was one photo where he's pointing at something, and I guess it's quite nice, and I was trying to figure out "How do you point like that?" Then you realize "Oh, shit. You get your arm and ohhh..." and suddenly it clicks into place. And then when you realize you're walking right and stuff, and people -- Spanish people! -- know who you're playing, without the moustache, they know immediately just by looking in your eyes, it's very satisfying. I like the idea of that; I'd quite like to do it again. And I'm always quite attracted to playing real people.
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q278/jorgeletralia/pattinsondali.jpg

How are you handling the massive, instant fame and the craziness?

It's quite stressful in a way, but it's only when you're by yourself. When I have my friends around it doesn't make any difference. I just spend a lot of time by myself, and I used to walk around the block by myself in various different cities, and I don't know, you start to feel a bit vulnerable, I guess. [Laughs]

How's the energy on 'New Moon' compared to 'Twilight,' because for 'Twilight' no one was sure if it was going to do well and now, obviously ...

Yeah, it's scary. It's a very, very different experience. Last time we were just kind of ... it was so easy to get the entire cast together. We'd all have dinner almost every day and be able to talk about it freely and stuff. Now it's quite difficult to even leave the hotel. And all these random little stories become someway, somehow newsworthy, so you have to be very secretive about everything. Even if you want to just clarify something in the script or something. It's just strange. It's just very different ... It's very strange when you're aware of being observed, I guess.
Robert Pattinson In Tokyo by hvyilnr.

Would you do full-frontal nudity like Daniel Radcliffe did?

I think it would depend on what it is. Yeah, it really does depend on what it is. And I don't think a lot of people would really want to see that. I think it would ruin the illusion. [Laughs] Note to Rob: I'm willing to chance it.

Cocky Confidence and Insecurity: May 8 Marks Pattinson's transformation to Mr. Dali

I know, I know. It's hard to imagine Mr. Hunky Spunk as anything but Edward Cullen. But beginning May 8, Pattinson will be on the big screen as Salvador Dali, so you've got a week to suck it up and view him like this:

RadarOnline just saw an exclusive screening of the flick, set to open on May 8, and reveals some of the major transformations Pattinson makes throughout the flick:

* Donning a funny-looking brown bob with bangs as the youngest version of Dali

* Eventually, he cuts his hair, cleans up and starts wearing suits.

* When a friend tells him the girls will go crazy after his makeover, he quips: “I expect so.”

* Later in the film, Pattinson wears Dali’s signature, upturned pencil mustache and takes on the cartoon-ish personality the painter was known for in his later years as his forbidden relationship with Lorca fell apart.

I've come to the conclusion, after seeing the wide range of acting skills that Rob posesses, that this movie will let us see the far end of the pendulum. And it will be ok.

RadarOnline says, "While this might not the Pattinson most fans are used to, Little Ashes gives him a chance to show his range as Dali, who boomerangs between cocky confidence and insecurity. And not to worry—during the scenes set in the early 20s, Pattinson looks as dashing as ever in suits and slicked-back hair. Overall, Pattinson’s brooding good looks and intensity make the couple’s tortured love affair feel very real—just as they do in Twilight. Be prepared to shed a few tears in this flick!"

Thanks for the heads up, Lindsay!

How can One Swoon Over Reading an Interview? I just did...

The Independent has a fantastic interview with the hawtest British boy known to man. Maybe I'm a bit partial, but reading about Robert Pattinson "rubbing his sleepy eyes" just makes me want to crawl back in bed with him....

About Twilight Fame:
Rubbing his sleepy eyes, he admits he's still trying to get his head round it all. "So many people have watched Twilight or heard about it, you can be sitting anywhere and the chances are someone will come up and recognise you." This, he adds, included coming out of a sandwich shop in Yorkshire, and being accosted by the only person on an otherwise empty street and being asked for a photo. "How can you have immediate recognition in Guisborough coming out of Benjis?" he giggles. "That was very strange!"
edward cullen by a1y53_210.

About Little Ashes:
"If you read some of his early-life autobiography, it's horrible... the amount of mental anguish he has to go through, just to have any kind of even vaguely sexual relationship. It's really depressing what he's going through in his head. Dali had a massive fear of penetration – penetrating someone or being penetrated."

According to Pattinson, he sees playing Dali as a turning point in his career. "To not betray or insult someone's memory, it seemed a lot more important than other jobs I've done before," he says. "I definitely felt I had a lot of freedom when I was doing for various reasons." Still, how does he think the Twilight fans will react to his love scenes with Beltran? "I think girls" – at this point he can't stop himself from a smutty chortle – "almost really like watching something like that. From what I've read, people really get excited about that – it sounds really sexy!"

Robert Pattinson as Salvadore Dali in Little Ashes by mamanaeole.

About his love life:

"I don't really care about it," he shrugs. "I have the same little set of friends and I don't have anyone who would really get affected adversely [by false rumours]. Every single person who they sort of romantically link me to... I just don't even really know anyone. So it doesn't really affect me that much." Is there any truth to the persistent rumour hooking him up with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart? "Er, no," he states. "I don't understand where that even comes from."

Hump Day Heart-Rob: Nip/Tucked edition.

Yes. It's true. Robert Pattinson naked. Naked and tucked. And because this blog is technically rated R for Rawr with the name alone, here's the naked tucked Salvador Dali picture in all its glory:

This picture solidifies my theories. Robert Pattinson is a fantasmic actor. I admire him even more than when he was simply Edward.

And one more little Hump Day Heart-Rob video- Robert speaks French. Spanish, French, British, American.... he's so continental!

Pattinson's Fans Will Soon See Him As A Proper Actor

Robert Pattinson's chap, Matthew McNulty, has feverishly fond things to say about RPattz, believing that Rob has much more talent than Twilight was able for him to show.

Matthew told The Evening Standard: "There's something that draws you to Rob. He is really intelligent and he's a charming chap as well.

"When the Twilight thing exploded I wasn't surprised. Little Ashes will be seen by a lot more people now.

"Previously he was just that guy from Harry Potter. The fact that he's playing Dali will wash that off a bit and people will see him as a proper actor."

Rob's fans will soon be able to see him in the film How To Be too.

How To Be movie Ft. Rob Pattinson by poisonedheart.
Rob in How To Be

The first time I saw The Haunted Airman, I was hooked. On Rob, not on Edward Cullen. And his continuing charm in every flick he does continues to win me over. I can't wait to see How to Be. But Little Ashes, even with a scantily clad British boy... I can't wrap my brain around that. Yet.

Robert Pattinson is an AMAZING actor.

Javier Beltran and Robert Pattinson don't see eye-to-eye on the filming of Little Ashes, says Towleroad.

Said Beltran: "We didn't have any problems with the sexuality. On the set it was less important than the emotions. The sex scenes are beautiful—tragic and painful."

Pattinson told GQ:

“I thought I’d never get another acting job again,” Pattinson says. “So I was like, ‘Yeah—why not try to do something weird?’ There’s all these gay sex scenes. And y’know, I haven’t even done a sex scene with a girl, in my whole career.”

“And here I am, with Javier [Beltrán], who plays Lorca, doing an extremely hard-core sex scene, where I have a nervous breakdown afterward. And because we’re both straight, what we were doing seemed kind of ridiculous. (Now he’s sort of laughing.) Trying to do it doggie-style. Trying to have a nervous breakdown while doing it doggie- style. And it wasn’t even a closed set. There were all these Spanish electricians giggling to themselves.”

Here's my personal warning before choosing to watch Little Ashes:

If you want to appreciate Edward Cullen and keep that pristine image of him in your mind, don't. I repeat, DON'T watch anything Little Ashes related.

If, however, you're a true Robert Pattinson fan, watch the trailer to further appreciate what an absolutely AMAZING actor he is. Seriously. He's good.

Thanks to PattinsonOnline for the tip.
